At Makerere University, the Research and Ethics Committees (RECs) are responsible for approving all research intended to be conducted within or outside the university. They are accredited, trusted, and approved RECs established to regulate research conducted in Uganda.
With RECs in place, all initial submissions are done online through the National Research Information Management System via https://nrims.uncst.go.ug. The following are the Makerere-approved RECs:

- School of Biomedical Sciences Research and Ethics Committee
- School of Health Sciences Research and Ethics Committee
- Uganda Cancer Institute Research and Ethics Committee
- School of Social Sciences Research and Ethics Committee
- School of Public Health Research and Ethics Committe
- Infectious Disease Institute Research and Ethics Committee
- Uganda Heart Institute Research and Ethics Committe
- College of Business and Management Sciences Research and Ethics Committe
- College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences Research and Ethics Committee
