MAKWC

The Makerere University Writing Center (MakWC) is one of the entities in the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Partnerships. It is a pivotal center aimed at enhancing Makerere University’s strategic goal of becoming a research-led institution by 2030.

The center provides faculty, staff and students with assistance on their papers, projects, reports, multi-modal documents and other writerly needs across disciplines. Writing centers are primarily spaces for collaboration in which writers and consultants work together to help writers achieve their goals.

To achieve its objectives, the MakWC has developed a comprehensive training and mentorship program. The program engages content specialists and mentors with extensive experience in writing, collaborative research and publications. Training employs a hybrid approach; integrating traditional teaching/ training methods with online platforms, case studies, and practical hands-on exercises. The Center also offers short courses spanning for 1 to 2 weeks for participants. Mentorship involves one-to-one connections between mentors and mentees, facilitated by the MakWC team.

The Writing Center (MakWC) therefore represents a transformative initiative poised to enhance academic and scholarly writing and publication capacities at the University in particular and contribute to national and regional development agendas. With robust support from internal and external stakeholders, MakWC is positioned for long-term success in fostering a culture of excellence in scholarly, academic and scientific writing.
