Makerere University’s Directorate of Research, Innovations and Partnerships (DRIP) recently hosted a high-level online sensitization session focused on elevating research ethics and governance. Held on April 9, 2026, the webinar addressed a critical need for earlier ethical engagement among graduate students to ensure timely compliance and academic integrity.
The event, which drew nearly 1,000 registrations and over 500 active participants, was a collaborative effort involving the Directorate of Graduate Training and the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST). Discussions centered on the fundamental principles of ethics, the role of Research Ethics Committees (RECs), and the navigation of institutional approval processes.
In her closing remarks, Prof. Sarah Ssali, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), reminded scholars that ethics is the “cornerstone of excellence,” urging students to integrate ethical responsibility into every stage of their work—from the initial proposal to final dissemination.
